Dear I-House Friends,
Summer has become one of the busiest times of the year at International House Berkeley. Summer sessions are now incredibly active on the Cal campus and since many of our summer session students are internationals, I-House is actually at greater capacity in the months of July and August than during the regular academic year.
So, the work of I-House normally accelerates during the latter half of the summer as we put on a host of programs and activities for summer residents and also try to complete a variety of facility improvement projects that we aren’t able to finish during the academic year. This sometimes makes for an interesting tightrope walk that we must take to ensure that we are continuously upgrading this marvelous facility while at the same time taking good care of those short-term residents who are here for approximately six weeks during the summer.
One of the most important ways that we demonstrate our concern for our residents’ experience here is by offering a superlative dining experience that is just as tasty and varied in the summer as it is during the academic year. The entire I-House dining team has risen to the challenge of offering great food options throughout the year and our dining hall is just as full in July and August as it is in January and February. The great advantage of the summer is that residents and guests can dine in the open air adjacent to the newly re-landscaped east side garden, the terrace on the west side of the dining hall and the Heller Patio in the courtyard between the Great Hall and the Dining Commons. This gives our summer residents an amazing variety of “al fresco” dining opportunities.
Our spring-summer 2016 edition of the I-House Times reflects a great deal of the activity that has occurred here at I-House and at several reunions that we have held in different locales throughout the spring. I hope you will find a moment during this summer season to catch up with all things I-House. While you may no longer reside within these walls, it is clear for many of our alumni that I-House never truly stops being your home.
I also want to thank you for your continued support and commitment to I-House. Our halls will be filled by academic year residents soon, and a new semester will be underway. It is thanks to friends and alumni like you that we are able to continue our mission of fostering a world of greater peace and understanding.
On behalf of all of us here at I-House, I wish you and your family all the best for the remainder of the summer.
